Alastair Martin Adamson was born in Scotland in 1901 and trained in zoology at the University of St. Andrews. On completion of his studies, he was appointed Assistant in Zoology to Professor D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson at St. Andrews and they developed a life-long friendship.
